Valentine's Day
February 17, 2005 - 9:41 PM I'm recovering at the moment from eating a very large amount of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Oh, the guilt. It was really good though. Anyway, I'm scattered and unfocused these days, and in dire need of regular yoga classes or a meticulous house or time alone or something to clear my cluttered head. (Instead, I drink wine and eat bowls of pasta and ice cream, which won't have quite the same effect.) I'm sure in this state, nothing I write will be particularly coherant or interesting. But still I write. I've been meaning to write about my Valentine's Day. I woke in the morning to that op-ed piece in the Times, which made me feel guilty for making a little construction paper heart collage Valentine with Ping for P-Daddy. No! Instead I should have paid a babysitter (with what money, I ask you?) to watch Ping while I go out and get a pedicure for my weirdly scaly feet and buy some lingerie (lingerie? I'm a little scared of lingerie. Even the word is kind of freaking me out at the moment. But that could be the ice cream talking.) and prepare a romantic Valentine's Day surprise for my dear, hard-working husband. Okay. Well, I didn't do that, but I thought at least I could rent a romantic movie for us to watch after Ping was asleep. So, after the girl's nap, I hopped on the bus in the rain with my little shopping cart and Ping in her sling. I bought flowers for P-Daddy and for my landlady, and some ice cream so, you know, my husband and I could feed each other romantic bites while we watch a movie, and headed over to the video store. Ping insisted on getting down, and because she's heavy and squirmy, I let her. I went into the store determined to be quick. I asked the woman at the store if they have In the Mood for Love. Funny thing about In the Mood for Love - we've already rented it three times, and never watched it for some strange reason. Everyone says it's great, and we really wanted to watch it each of the three times, but it just didn't happen for one reason or another. But, a friend just recommended it as the perfect romantic Valentine's movie, and I thought, yes! I may have scaly feet and I may be wearing overalls and we may be ordering pizza tonight, but at least we can finally watch this movie. I am a good wife after all! Yeah, so, anyway, they didn't have it. So then I was trying to find something - anything - to rent to make it a romantic evening, damnit and Ping kept running around grabbing videos off the shelf and I was really distracted. Then she started handing me copies of Elf saying, "Um . . . Elf!" and cracking up. After going through that about 70 times, I finally gave up and left without a movie. We had pizza. We put the baby to bed. We watched Supernanny. We fell asleep. Happy Valentine's Day. I dreamed that night that Supernanny was P-Daddy's ex-girlfriend, and that he decided to get back together with her. |
